Recreational Facilities & Activities

Looking for things to do in and around Wellington? This page is full of places to go to enjoy nature, sports, or just spend a day with the family. We're including as many of the options as possible, but this list is far from exhaustive. Like the rest of this site, this page is always under construction as we are always finding new things to add.

Wellington Recreation Park

This is a major regional park that is located on the western border of the village, just north of State Route 18. This park hosts several large tournaments in softball. The village is constantly making improvements to the park, but at last count there were eight baseball diamonds (lighted), a lighted tennis court, a skatepark, two basketball courts (lighted), a soccer field, three picnic pavilions, a playground, a sand volleyball court, horseshoe pits, and a one-mile nature walk through a wooded area.

Lorain County Metroparks

The Lorain County Metroparks operates several parks around Wellington that are available for picnics and relaxation.

  • The Metroparks operate Splash Zone in southern Oberlin. Splash Zone features an indoor 8-lane pool, a tot lagoon, outdoor zero-depth entry pool, water toys, a 24-foot high water slide, playground, fitness room, aerobics room, water jets, and a waterfall.
  • The Charlemont Reservation is a 757 acre park that is located in Rochester and Huntington Townships, just minutes from Wellington. This undeveloped park features miles of equestrian trails. This is the only park in the system that allows hunting (for rabbit and pheasant).
  • Caley Reservation is located on 507 acres off West Road, just north of Webster Road. The park features wetlands, forest and field habitats, two large ponds, and a stretch of the Wellington Creek. Wildflower hikes and fishing are popular at this park just north of Wellington.
  • The Carlisle Reservation off of Diagonal Road north of LaGrange is the largest park in the system. At 1,820 acres, there is plenty to do here. This park includes a visitor's center, duck ponds, Forest Hills Golf Course, equestrian trails, and picnic pavilions.

Findley State Park

Findley State Park is run by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Findley features a 93 acre lake surrounded by 838 acres of mostly wooded terrain. Findley's 272 campsites are open year-round and a typical summer weekend will find the park near capacity. The campground features showers, flush toilets, laundry facilities, dump station, game room, and a camp store. Pets are permitted on some sites. Electric motors are permitted on the lake, which has two separate boat launches. Canoes, rowboats, and paddleboats are available for rental on the beach side of the lake. You can enjoy 435 feet of beautiful beaches, over 10 miles of trails, and many nature programs that are provided at the park.

Lorain County Fair

The Lorain County Fair is run by the Lorain County Agricultural Society. This is the second largest county fair in Ohio and is one of the oldest. The fair is always two weeks before Labor Day, at the end of August. Join us for hundreds of vendors, tons of food, rides, games, and animals.

Country Skateland

This roller rink is located in Pittsfield, just a few miles north of Wellington. Enjoy a session of roller skating - fun for the whole family!

Lake Erie and The Islands

One of America's "Five Great Lakes", Lake Erie and her beaches are just 25 minutes from Wellington. Enjoy a day at the beach building sandcastles and swimming or have an outing on the lake with a Lake Erie cruise, rental boat, or your own boat. Take a ferry to one several islands and enjoy a day in paradise! Visit Put-in-Bay, the "Bass Islands" (South, Middle, and North), or Kelley's Island.

Cedar Point

Get to the Point, Cedar Point! America's Roller Coast! Cedar Point holds several world records such as the most roller coasters in a single park (16!), the the tallest coaster (Top Thrill Dragster, 420 Feet), fastest coaster (Top Thrill Dragster, 120 MPH), and tallest wooden coaster (Mean Streak, 161 Feet). Visit the Soak City water park, Hotel Breakers Resort, and the all new Castaway Bay year-round, indoor water park, spa, and resort. All this fun is located in Sandusky, just an hour from Wellington!

Geauga Lake

Geauga Lake went through some rocky times from 2000-2003 after being purchased by Six Flags Amusements. But now that Cedar Fair, Ltd. (parent company of Cedar Point) has purchased the park, things seem to be getting back to basics. Centered around Lake Geauga in Aurora (90 minutes from Wellington), this 690-acre park features ten roller coasters and dozens of other thrill rides, shops, and entertainment. This is one of the oldest parks in America, having been established in 1887!

Cleveland - So Much to Do!

Cleveland is less than an hour from Wellington and has so many activities it is hard to keep count! Major league sports go year-round in this industrial city! With the Browns, Indians, and Cavaliers, you can see all kinds of action in Clevelands new stadiums and arena! There are museums galore! The Great Lakes Science Center is fun for the whole family. And don't forget to stop next door at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Let's not forget the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Also the William G. Mather Museum, NASA Glenn Research Center, the Children's Museum, the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum, or the Western Reserve Historical Society. Wow! So much to do!
